Recent research shows that daily doses of statins and medications aimed at lowering blood pressure aren’t all that’s needed to prevent heart disease for patients who are obese.
The study reveals that many patients are being medicated with drugs that aren’t helping their condition.
Study Conducted
The study involved 6,814 men and women between the ages of 45 and 84.
After analyzing the effects of heart medications and statins that were given to some participants in comparison to those who were given a placebo, patients discovered that medications alone won’t help risks associated with obesity.
“A decade ago, people thought, ‘Gosh, all we need to do is treat those risk factors and we can ameliorate the effects of obesity’, so our study looked at whether this was true or not,” explains Dr. Gregory L. Burke.
Patient Treatment Shows no Improvement
According to Lona Sandon, a spokeswoman for the American Diabetic Association, many patients are being treated with drugs that aren’t decreasing health risks.
“The American mentality is, ‘if I take those pills, I’ll be okay,’” explains Sandon. “However, complete lifestyle changes like cardio exercise and eating healthy on a daily basis have consistently proven more beneficial than all these medications.”
