Reports claim several websites available to the public don’t require a prescription to purchase narcotics, stimulants and other medications.
A recent study claims most of these sites don’t have any controls to prevent children from making purchases.
Report Exposes Dangerous Websites
A report regarding drugs being sold online has been released by the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University.
The report reveals that about 85 percent of web sites that sell prescription drugs like OxyContin, Ritalin and Valium, don’t request a prescription.
“Anyone of any age can obtain dangerous and addictive prescription drugs with the click of a mouse,” says Joseph A. Califano Jr., the president of the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse.
Children at Risk
One of the most disturbing things found by the authors of the report is the fact that these sites don’t block children.
Children are easily gaining access to prescription drugs that could contain harmful ingredients or harm them due to side effects.
According to researchers, 78 percent of children ages 12 to 17 have access to the internet, which is putting a large numbers of kids at risk of being harmed by drugs.
