Johnson & Johnson, the drug manufacturer of the first-and-only Ortho Evra birth control patch, is making efforts to prevent any negative attention over its unsafe drug by buying the rights to online domain addresses such as Deathbypatch.com and Orthoevrakills.com.
Ortho Evra, which has been prescribed to more than four million women worldwide, was approved as a transdermal contraceptive in 2002. However, only three years later, serious concerns were raised when the U.S. Food and Drug Administration began receiving reports of potentially deadly side effects linked to Ortho Evra.
A February 2006 study indicated that women wearing the patch were exposed to 60 percent more estrogen than those on the pill, thus doubling the risk of developing blood clots that could lead to stroke and death.
While Johnson & Johnson did purchase the negative domain names, they don’t plan on using them. The purchase was solely made to preempt Ortho Evra critics and plaintiff’s attorneys from drawing negative attention to the dangerous contraceptive.
