U.S. health officials recently issued a warning to patients and doctors about the potential risks associated with medications prescribed to treat osteoporosis.
This warning informs the public about the possibility of severe bone, joint and muscle pain that has been linked to these drugs.
Medications Mentioned in Warning
The prescriptions that are mentioned in the warning include a group of medications that are apart of a class known as bisphosphonates.
The drugs that fit under this category include Fosamax, which is produced by Merck & Co Inc., Actonel, from Procter & Gamble and Sanofi-Aventis.
Problems with Medications
Health officials claim that there is a potential for severe and incapacitating pain that can be found on the prescribing instructions for all bisphosphonates.
The FDA says that some doctors may overlook the link between these drugs and the pain that their patients may be experiencing.
The pain can supposedly occur days, months or even years after patients begin taking the bisphosphonates.
Although the agency is still researching the risks associated with these drugs, they suggest that doctors consider think twice before prescribing bisphosphonates to their patients.
