$63.8M Settlement Approved in Paxil Class-Action

A Madison County judge approved a $63.8 million settlement in a class-action lawsuit against GlaxoSmithKline, the makers of Paxil, that claimed the company promoted the drug for use in children while withholding information about its dangers.

The settlement will enable thousands of parents whose children were prescribed the popular antidepressant to receive reimbursement for the cost of the medication.

Class members—United States residents who purchased Paxil for their children—with receipts of their purchases will receive full reimbursement for their expenses while those without documentation are eligible to receive up to $100.

Attorney fees for the plaintiffs are also covered by the settlement.

Paxil is a widely prescribed drug used in the treatment of depression and anxiety. However, Paxil and other antidepressants have come under scrutiny in recent times after being linked to birth defects, an increased risk of suicide, and other serious side effects.
