Man Sues Pfizer for Gambling Addiction

-July 18, 2008

A former banker who worked on Wall Street recently filed a suit against Pfizer Pharmaceuticals for the side effects he suffered while taking their medication.

The man was prescribed Mirapex to treat Parkinson’s disease and claims the medication caused him to develop a compulsive gambling problem.

Lawsuit Filed Over Mirapex

Randolph Simens, 55, claims he took Mirapex from 2002 to 2007 after he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.

After several months of taking the drug, he says he got an “itch” to begin gambling which only worsened over time.

Simens eventually lost $3 million to his sudden uncontrollable gambling habit.

Drug Side Effects

According to reports, Mirapex stopped being marketing in 2005 due to claims of serious side effects in patients who were prescribed the medication.

Among the most common side effects was a tendency to develop compulsive behaviors, such as gambling.

Although they haven’t marketing the medication in three years, Mirapex is still being prescribed throughout the country to treat restless leg syndrome.

Victim Goes to Court

Simens filed the suit claiming the defendants didn’t put adequate warnings on the medication and as a result he suffered both emotionally and financially.

The suit states that the plaintiff became “reckless” and began spending entire nights at casinos and on the Internet to feed his new addiction.
