Arthritis Drugs Potentially Harmful

-June 4, 2008

The FDA is currently investigating a group of arthritis drugs that could be linked to cancer in children.

The group of medications in question is made by Abbott Laboratories, Schering-Plough Corp, and various other companies.

Drugs Linked to Cancer

According to FDA officials, they have received 30 reports of children and young adults contracting cancer while using certain arthritis drugs over the past decade.

Researchers are now conducting studies on the medications to see what is causing this link to cancer in younger patients.

Medications in Question

The drugs that researchers are currently analyzing include:

• Abbot Labs’ Humira
• Enbrel
• Schering-Plough’s Remicade

The medications are typically prescribed to children who have arthritis and help to block the chemical in their bodies that provoke inflammation.
