Women Given Warning for Prempro

-August 7, 2007

Women across the country are being warned about one of Wyeth Pharmaceuticals top selling drugs.

Wyeth is currently in the midst of hundreds of lawsuits by women claiming the drug has made them sicker and even enhanced their cancer.

Indiana Woman Fights Back

Marie Young is one of the thousands suing Wyeth after being prescribed Prempro.

Young was diagnosed in 2001 with breast cancer and doctors claim there were no risks involved in her illness.

Doctors prescribed her Prempro, a combination hormone replacement therapy that is used to relieve women from hot flashes, thinning bones and sexual side effects as they become menopausal.

“Marcie was prescribed it because of the cardiovascular history in her family,” says Young's attorney, Elizabeth Doepken.

“This drug has never been shown to have any kind of cardiovascular benefit. She did not have to take this drug. There was no reason for her to take this drug,” added Doepken.

Others At Risk

Over the past 20 years, the combined estrogen-progestin packed pill has been prescribed to millions of women.

There are currently 5,000 pending lawsuits against Wyeth due to the severe side effects of the drug.

Women like Young are claiming it is enhancing their illnesses.

“These women were not warned that their risk of getting breast cancer was three times greater than if they didn't take the drug. There's no doubt in my mind that this caused her cancer,” states Doepken.
