Calcium Supplements May Not Reduce Bone Fractures

-July 1, 2008

Many people, particularly the elderly, have been told that taking calcium supplements daily can be beneficial in preventing hip and other bone fractures.

However, recent research shows that there is no real reduction in the risk of fractures when taking additional supplements.

Research Conducted on Calcium

The Agricultural Research Service (ARS) recently funded a study that suggests the amount of calcium that is currently recommended for American adults may be more than what’s needed.

Calcium intake studies, which were published between 1960 and 2006, have been studied by Bess Dawson-Hughes and colleagues.

Information from biomedical databases was also analyzed in the study review.

Studies on Hip Fractures

Among the studies that were closely analyzed by researchers was one involving 170, 991 women with almost 3,000 hip fractures.

Five of the studies included 68,606 men with 214 hip fractures.

From all these cases, it was determined that calcium had no benefits in helping with major fractures, such as hip fractures.
