Sleeping Pills Could Cause Health Problems

According to a recent study, a majority of Americans have trouble falling asleep, staying asleep and waking up too early.

As a result, many turn to sleeping pills and other medications to help them as they believe to be “problem sleeper.”

However, researchers claim that many of these pills and medications can lead to addiction, the taking of other, unnecessary drugs, and other health complications.

Bad Sleepers Turning to Medications

People with sleeping problems are more than likely to turn to medications for an instant cure, but the results in many cases are frightening.

The study shows that one in five Americans took prescription or over-the-counter medicines in the last year alone to help them with sleeping issues.

Although these medications are often recommended to be taken for no more than two weeks, 14 percent of those who participated in the study took medicines for at least a month.

Five percent turned to stronger medications, which they also stayed on longer than recommended.

Drug Side Effects

In 63 percent of those who took sleeping pills, 24 percent supposedly became addicted to the drug they were taking.

Researchers say along with the addictive nature of some of these medications, other side effects typically include:

• Daytime drowsiness
• Sleep walking
• Sleep driving
• Sleep eating
