Researchers recently announced that they may found the cause of the muscle pain experienced by those who take cholesterol-lowering statins.
A genetic variant was recently found that reportedly causes the muscles to weaken, which is known as myopathy, and for patients taking statins, this weakening only increases.
Researchers Reach New Findings
The side effect for patients taking statins is reportedly very common and has been reported in a number of studies.
A new study conducted reportedly shows that this myopathy-related variant is apparent in a quarter of the population, and many are unaware.
“We found a variant that affects the transport of statins into the liver,” explains Dr. Rory Collins, who led the latest study.
Testing Encouraged Before Prescribing Statins
After the findings were revealed, researchers encouraged doctors to first test their patients to detect whether they are at high risk for developing myopathy.
The study proved the even when the variant version is present; the risk of myopathy depends upon the dosage of a statin given to a patient.
“A routine screening test would need to be developed, but that would not be complicated,” says Collins.
