Trasylol Sales Suspended

-November 5, 2007

Bayer AG is reportedly suspending sales of the medication, Trasylol, in congruence with the requests from regulators.

Growing evidence has linked the drug to a higher risk of death than its leading competitors.

Medication Questioned Worldwide

Bayer stated that its decision to halt sales of the drug was prompted by orders from regulators in the U.S., Canada, Germany and other countries around the world.

Trasylol has been used to reduce blood loss and enables patients undergoing heart –bypass surgery to avoid transfusions.

History Behind the Controversial Drug

Trasylol was approved in the United States in 1993 and has been tied to high-profile concerns regarding safety since 2006.

Although sales dropped by a third in the last year alone, the medication has grossed $338 million since its approval.

Last month, a Canadian clinical trial came to a halt after the drug appeared to be too risky.

FDA officials have said that they can't identify a patient population in which the benefits of this drug outweigh the risks.

FDA Recalls Drug

FDA officials have reported that Bayer would slowly remove the medication from store shelves so that producers of similar drugs would have time to stock pharmacies with extra products.

The safety of Trasylol became even more evident when a study was published in the January 2006 issue of The New England Journal of Medicine.

Last month, the FDA finally announced the new findings from the Canadian trial, which clearly exemplified the risk of death associated with the medication.
