Researchers at the Imperial College London have created a new polio vaccine that has the potential to eradicate polio in Nigeria, one of only four countries worldwide in which polio is still an epidemic.
The new vaccine, known as mOPV1, is a monovalent oral medication, meaning that it only has a single antibody and that the vaccine is taken orally.
Details of the Study
In their recent study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, researchers tested the effectiveness of their new vaccine by administering it to Nigerians for one year (from 2006 to 2007).
Over the course of the year, the number of cases reported in Nigeria dropped by about 75 percent. Currently, medical experts recommend that children receive four doses of a polio vaccine to be sufficiently immunized.
Barriers to Overcome
Unfortunately, while mOPV1 is clearly effective and powerful, it can only work if it is properly administered to the children who need it.
In early 2008, the World Health Assembly (WHA) highlighted this concern, noting that immunizations are most essential in northern Nigeria – the area of the country with the most new cases of polio.
In fact, reports show that more than 20 percent of children in northern Nigeria have not been administered a polio vaccination. Another 55 percent of these children haven't received the recommended four doses, meaning they are still at a significant risk of developing the crippling disease.
To effectively combat this disease, the World Health Organization is currently working with the Nigerian government to get more children immunized.
