In a response to an ABC News/Washington Times investigation, the Veterans Administration is reportedly going to warn 32,000 veterans about the risks of Chantix.
The medication, Chantix, has been linked to suicide and violent behavior in patients.
Investigation Conducted
The investigation conducted reportedly revealed that the VA waited three months to notify veterans of an experiment that revealed the side effects of the drug.
The veterans who were enrolled in the investigation reportedly suffered from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and engaged in a behavioral study while taking the drug.
Veterans Affairs Takes Action
According to reports, Veterans Affairs Secretary, James Peake, says he is going to personally write warning letters to 940 veterans in the study, as well as 31,000 other veterans who have been prescribed Chantix.
“Our first responsibility is to our veterans,” explains Peake.
Peake says he wishes the VA hadn’t taken so long before warning veterans of the harmful side effects of the drug.
Veteran Breakdown
A veteran who was involved in the Chantix study, James Elliot, reportedly suffered a mental breakdown and was involved in a near-lethal confrontation with a police officer.
Elliot blames his behavior on the drug.
