FDA receives reports for Viagra blindness side effects

–May 27, 2005

The FDA said it has received reports of partial vision loss among 38 Viagra patients and four Cialis patients. Both Viagra and Cialis are impotence drugs.

Agency officials said they are still unclear whether blindness is a side effect linked to the two drugs, but has suggested changes in the drugs' labeling as a precaution.

Known as a disorder called non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy, or NAION, the type of blindness is common among people over 50 who have conditions like diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and high cholesterol - which are also factors that contribute to erectile dysfunction.

Viagra has been available since 1998, and has long been associated to such vision problems like "bluish or blurred vision, or being sensitive to light." There have been 23 million people who have taken Viagra, and Pfizer believes there is no evidence showing a link between its drug and NAION.

The possible Viagra side effects come at an especially unfavorable time for the drug industry in light of recent drug recalls.
