Doses of Viagra in excess of 100mg may decrease the ability to smell, according to a study published in the Journal of Urology . The researchers speculated that this decreased smelling ability was due to increased nasal congestion brought on by the popular drug.
A team of German researchers at the University of Dresden Medical School recently studied the effect of Viagra on a patient’s odor detection, discrimination and identification abilities.
The study involved 20 young male volunteers who were given a 50 or 100mg dose of Viagra, or a placebo. The participants were then exposed to a device that dispensed various odors.
Volunteers who received the 100mg dose of Viagra experienced impaired detection and discrimination abilities compared with those who were given either a 50mg dose or a placebo.
The authors of the study noted that previous studies have linked the drug to a decline in nasal airflow. Viagra has also been associated with an increased risk for worsened sleep apnea, blindness , and more.
