Viagra maker sued

–June 8, 2005

A Montgomery County, Texas man is suing the maker of Viagra, Pfizer Inc., for failing to warn users about possible adverse drug effects that allegedly caused his blindness.

Filed Tuesday, the Viagra lawsuit is among the first to be filed, but many expect similar suits will soon follow. Viagra is a blockbuster drug used to treat erectile dysfunction.

Last month, Pfizer announced a small number of men who have taken Viagra suffered non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy, or NAION, a condition referred to as "stroke in the eye". NAION occurs when blood pressure drops, restricting the flow of oxygenated blood to the optic nerve, which can lead to temporary or permanent blindness.

In the Viagra lawsuit, the Texas man accuses the drug company of failing to warn him of the possible harm despite knowing about the dangers. On Pfizer's Web site, the company says there is no evidence showing NAION occurred more frequently in men taking Viagra compared to men of similar age and health who did not take Viagra.

Seeking approval as a class action, the lawsuit contends more than 23 million men have taken Viagra since 1998.

The Texas man is seeking damages in excess of $75,000.
