Government warns Viagra use could make you blind

–July 11, 2005

The FDA ordered warnings be included on Viagra, as well as other anti-impotence drugs on the market, warning some users have developed a form of blindness that could be linked to the drug.

Called NAION, or non-arteritic ischemic optic neuropathy, the FDA cautioned it is impossible to know if Viagra is to blame for the vision problems since it shares the same risk factors that a high number of anti-impotence patients also have. NAION is sudden vision loss caused when blood flow to the optic nerve is blocked, considered one of the most common causes of sudden vision loss in older people.

Every year, anywhere from 1,000 to 6,000 cases of NAION occur. Anyone taking or considering taking Viagra, Cialis or Levitra are advised to tell their health care providers if they have ever had severe loss of vision, which might reflect NAION. The FDA said in a statement these patients are at an increased risk of developing the sudden blindness again.
