New Study Finds Risks with Vitamin B

-August 20, 2008

A recent study conducted to determine whether or not folic acid and vitamin B supplements help the heart has ended early.

Researchers claim the vitamins weren’t helping participants and in some cases, were even harming them.

Study Conducted Reveals New Findings

The study, which was conducted at Haukeland University Hospital in Norway and consisted of 31, 000 participants, was cut short.

Three quarters of the participants in the study reportedly took various doses of vitamin B and folic acid, while others received a placebo.

Risks Found

Although those taking vitamin B had a slight decrease in their risk of stroke, they also had an increase in their risk for developing cancer.

“This confirms what a lot of recent studies have found, no benefit of taking vitamin B supplements to reduce the risk of heart disease, and it raises a few red flags,” explains Alice H. Lichtenstein, a professor of nutrition at Tufts University.

Among the risks found, researchers also discovered that there is no real evidence that individuals taking B vitamins will have a decrease in their risk for heart disease.
