New reports are making many question the benefits of taking vitamin D supplements on a daily basis.
Trevor Marshall, a professor at the Murdoch University School of Biological Medicine says that increased vitamin D intake could affect much more than just your nutrition and bone health.
Researchers Investigate Risks and Benefits
In Marshall’s report, which analyzed the risks and benefits of the vitamin D supplement, he explains how the Vitamin D Nuclear Receptor (VDR) acts in repression of several genes, including genes that are associated with diseases.
“Vitamin D has been used for decades, and yet the epidemics of chronic disease, such as heart disease and obesity, are just getting worse,” explains Marshall.
Marshall’s research also shows that vitamin D can potentially block the activation of VDR, which essentially can have the opposite effect from that of sunshine.
Vitamin D’s Effect on the Immune System
According to researchers, vitamin D can suppress the immune system and prevent it from working properly.
Although vitamin D deficiency has been reported as being the cause of disease throughout the years, this new research shows that the vitamin is more likely making diseases worse.
“We have found that vitamin D supplementation, even at levels many consider desirable, interferes with recovery in these patients,” says J.C. Waterhouse, lead author of a book regarding the vitamin and its association with chronic disease.
