FDA regulators are currently investigating whether Vytorin, which is a well-known cholesterol lowering drug, is linked to cancer.
Officials have already informed health-care professionals about the risks that could be linked to the medication.
Vytorin Details
Vytorin is a combination drug that is made up of several compounds, including simvastatin and ezetimibe.
The combination of these drugs is meant to reduce the levels of bad cholesterol in patients by decreasing the production of cholesterol by the liver and inhibiting the absorption of cholesterol in the intestine.
Trial Discovers Risks
The recent concerns over Vytorin stem from a recent trial conducted by the SEAS that tested the medication.
A large percentage of those who participated in the five-year trial were diagnosed with and died from various forms of cancer.
FDA Issues Warning
The FDA has urged health care providers to monitor their patients who are on Vytorin and be on the lookout for certain side effects.
A more solid report of the trial is expected to be given to the FDA in the next three months and officials will have a better understanding of the risks and benefits of the drug.
