Vytorin Not Successful in Study

-March 31, 2008

After reports came in that a trial involving Vytorin failed, doctors are encouraging patients to return to older treatment to help with high cholesterol.

Millions of Americans have reportedly already taken the medication or one of its components, like Zetia.

However, doctors were surprised to find in a recent study that Vytorin failed in helping to prevent heart disease.

Study Finds Shocking Results

The study took a closer look at Zetia and Vytorin, which combined, sold more than $5 billion without any definitive proof of its benefits.

Researchers tested whether Vytorin was better than Zocor and found that the medication has no results and showed no added benefits.

“People need to turn back to statins,” says Dr. Harlan Krumholz, a cardiologist from Yale University.

Statins Prove to be a Better Alternative

Some common statins that have been proven beneficial to those with high cholesterol include Lipitor and Crestor.

“We know that statins are good drugs. We know that they reduce risks,” says Krumholz.
