Warning Issued to Vytorin Users

-September 2, 2008

The warning issued to Vytorin users still stands as results from more studies do nothing to rule out a risk of cancer linked to the drug.

Researchers involved with the study are cautioning patients and doctors before they continue to use and prescribe the drug until more is known.

Studies Conducted to Determine Risks

Studies were recently conducted analyzing the benefits and risks associated with Vytorin and are published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Vytorin is a cholesterol lowering medication and the possible risk of cancer link arose in July when a study by Dr. Terje Pederson discovered flaws in the drug.

After this initial study, doctors began seeing an increase in the amount of cancer cases among patients prescribed the drug; therefore, more studies were conducted.

The most recent study, conducted at Oxford University in England, found higher rates of cancer and deaths among Vytorin users.

Patients and Doctors Cautioned

Those who have worked on the studies are still weary of the drug and its effects and are cautioning the public to take caution.
"The jury is still out as to whether there's a cancer signal," states Dr. Gordon Tomaselli, the chief of cardiology at Johns Hopkins Hospital and a spokesman for the American Heart Association.
