FDA Alert, Tainted Weight Loss Products

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned consumers not to purchase or use a large number of tainted weight loss products, Dec. 22. The warning alerted consumers against the consumption of more than 25 weight loss products, because the may contain harmful ingredients.

Weight Loss Products May Contain Harmful Ingredients

According to the FDA, some of the products may contain "undeclared active pharmaceutical ingredients," including:

  • Sibutramine, a controlled substance
  • Rimonabant, a drug that is not approved for marketing in the U.S.
  • Phenytoin, an  anti-seizure medication
  • Phenolphtheleinm, a solution used for chemical experiments, thought to cause cancer

According to the FDA, the majority of the weight loss products are marketed as dietary supplements and can be purchased online and in some retail stores. In the alert, the FDA advises consumers who are using any of the products to stop use and consult their physicians immediately.

Serious Potential Side Effects

There are several serious side effects attributed to the so-called weight loss products, including:

  • Seizures
  • High blood pressure
  • Tachycardia
  • Palpitations
  • Heart attack
  • Stroke

In an effort to protect consumers against these dangerous products and drugs, the FDA encourages all American consumers to consult their physicians before starting any type of weight loss plan.

  • Perfect Slim
  • ProSlim Plus
  • Superslim

  • 2 Day Diet
  • 8 Factor Diet
  • Royal Slimming Formula
  • Slimtech
  • TripleSlim
