Zyprexa Lawsuits Continue To Grow

-October 10, 2006

A Baton Rouge woman who claims that Zyprexa caused her to develop diabetes and severe stomach and bowel problems has filed what marks the third lawsuit against Eli Lilly in a month.

Noel Dixon alleges that Lilly, the maker of Zyprexa , failed to provide adequate warnings as to the drug's dangerous side effects, which include hyperglycemia and diabetes.

Two similar Zyprexa lawsuits were filed earlier last month in Baton Rouge federal court. Robert Salim, the attorney representing all three plaintiffs, said he has filed approximately 30 Zyprexa-related cases in Louisiana.

In 2004, about 8,000 Zyprexa lawsuits were transferred to the Eastern District of New York. Those cases were recently settled for an estimated $700 million.

Zyprexa (olanzapine) is a widely prescribed anti-psychotic drug commonly used in the treatment of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, anxiety, and attention deficit disorder. The drug received FDA approval in 1996, but its warning labeling was not strengthened until 2004.
