Zyprexa Lawsuit Filed Over Fatal Pancreatitis

January 17, 2006

Eli Lilly is facing another Zyprexa lawsuit. The complaint was filed this week on behalf of a 39-year-old Arizona woman who died after suffering cardiac arrest caused by Zyprexa-induced pancreatitis.

According to the lawsuit, the woman developed pancreatitis as a result of taking Zyprexa to treat bipolar disorder. She began taking the drug in 1996, the year it gained FDA approval, and suffered her first case of pancreatitis in November 1999.

In January 2005, she was diagnosed with the condition for a second time. Four days after being admitted to the hospital, the victim died of cardiac arrest.

Over the past decade, Zyprexa has been prescribed to more than 17 million people. However, since its debut, the drug has been linked to hyperglycemia, diabetes, and pancreatitis.

Last year, Eli Lilly the maker of Zyprexa agreed to settle approximately 8,000 lawsuits for a reported $750 million. Those lawsuits claimed that the drug maker failed to provide adequate warnings about dangerous Zyprexa side effects .

In December 2006, the New York Times revealed that Eli Lilly intentionally withheld and/or downplayed the dangers of its popular antipsychotic from the public and healthcare professionals for as long as a decade.
