New Report Finds Eli Lilly Plays Down Zyprexa Risks

December 18, 2006

A new published report has found that the drug manufacturer Eli Lilly and Co. has engaged in a 10-year effort to play down the serious health risks of their best-selling schizophrenia drug Zyprexa, according to inside Lilly documents and messages.

Zyprexa Linked to Diabetes

The internal documents reveal that executives at the drug company have kept very important data from doctors and patients that links Zyprexa to obesity and the risk of increased blood sugarknown factors that cause diabetes.

According to Lilly's own published informationcovering the time between 1995-200430 percent of Zyprexa patients gained more than 22 pounds after only taking the drug for one year. Even more alarming are the reports of some patients gaining 100 or more pounds.

However, the drug company was more concerned with profit than consumer safety. Lilly believed the sales of Zyprexa would plummet if they revealed to doctors that the schizophrenia drug might pose the risk of unmanageable weight gain or diabetes.

Critics of Zyprexa including the American Diabetes Association argue that the drug, which was approved in 1996, is more likely to pose the risk of diabetes than any other popular schizophrenia medication. Nearly two million people around the globe have used Zyprexa.

Other Zyprexa Dangers

Zyprexa, an antipsychotic drug prescribed to patients with schizophrenia, has also been associated with other dangerous side effects including hyperglycemia, neuroleptic malignant syndrome, suicidal thoughts and behaviors, delusions, aggression, and more.
