Accutane maker ignored company doctor's recommendation

-December 7, 2004

According to a USA Today report, Accutane's maker, Hoffman-LaRoche, ignored an internal doctor's recommendation that people who take the acne medication be monitored for signs of depression and place a warning on the drug's U.S. label stating this.

USA Today cited allegations in a federal court case against Accutane's maker that the company did not include drug warnings because of its potential impact on sales and that it could prompt lawsuits. Ever since Accutane was approved in 1982 as a last resort medication for severe cases of acne, the drug has been controversial. Fetal death and birth defects in children whose mothers take Accutane while pregnant has been reported ever since Accutane's emergence.

FDA researcher David Graham named Accutane as one of at least five drugs on the market that should be investigated because of safety concerns when he was testifying before a congressional committee about the recalled arthritis drug Vioxx. Accutane has been blamed for causing depression and mental illnesses, though Roche has continued to maintain that the drug is effective when used properly.
