A letter by three top doctors published in The New England Journal of Medicine recommends doctors stop prescribing Pfizer Inc.'s arthritis painkiller Bextra. The letter appeared in the journal the same day Pfizer announced its other arthritis painkiller Celebrex was linked to double the risk of heart attacks.
Bextra and Celebrex are the only remaining COX-2 inhibitors currently on the market following the Vioxx recall announcement September 30. Since the Vioxx recall, COX-2 drug safety questions have been raised, and the doctors said that in the wake of the Vioxx recall and increased safety warnings put on Bextra labeling, Bextra should be avoided.
In the letter, the doctors wrote, "We believe the doubts raised about the safety of valdecoxib (Bextra), constitute a potential imminent hazard to public health." The article was supposed to be included in an issue dated December 23 but was released early.
Pfizer has aggressively defended Bextra and Celebrex ever since the Vioxx recall. For more information on Bextra, please contact us.
