After Crestor was approved in August 2003, a top government researcher praised the cholesterol-reducing drug but never mentioned his ties as a consultant to the drug maker, according to charges by a watchdog group Public Citizen. The director of the group, Dr. Sidney Wolfe, also charged that not only was he a consultant to Crestor's AstraZeneca but led a company financed symposium during a meeting of the American Heart Association eight months prior to Crestor's approval. Charges were made in a letter sent to the National Institutes of Health director, who is now reviewing it.
