Cowardice accusations dropped after Lariam imbalance blamed

-July 15, 2004

A case against Sgt. Pogany, initially accused of cowardice and later reduced to dereliction of duty, was finally dropped after nine months. Pogany was an interrogator with Special Forces when he suffered a panic attack after seeing a bloody Iraqi corpse on his second day in the war zone. According to a Navy doctor, Pogany was reacting to damage to his balance system that was probably caused by Lariam, the anti-malaria drug that has been controversial in recent months.

In an advisory note by the Department of Veterans Affairs in June 2004, doctors and health care providers were warned of Lariam side effects, including anxiety, paranoia, hallucinations, depression, suicidal thoughts, psychosis, and other neuropsychiatric effects. The Navy has launched a Lariam study on its effects on service members after diagnoses and accusations of deadly and dangerous Lariam side effects continue to be made.
