The debate over thimerosal containing vaccines and the dramatic rise in autism cases alongside increases in required and recommended vaccines has caused heated discussions for years. Thimerosal is a preservative that was used widely in vaccines until the CDC and American Academy of Pediatrics asked drug makers to remove it from childhood vaccines in 1999. While the FDA and other government agencies has continued to maintain there is a lack of evidence showing a link between thimerosal and autism, many people believe the connection is very coincidental.
Many parents of autistic children claim their children were developing normally until receiving childhood immunizations containing thimerosal. Thimerosal contains mercury, one of the most toxic substances on Earth, and many people question the desire to use mercury in vaccines in the first place. The government now wants babies immunized against the flu after last winter's devastating flu season, but this recommendation is not being accepted.
Iowa, California, as well as other states have banned the use of vaccines containing thimerosal, and other states are getting ready to take the same action. Legislation to ban use of thimerosal in vaccines has been introduced in Congress as well. Accusations of cover-up, conspiracy, faulty science, greed and other claims have been made from parents, groups, experts and others against the use of thimerosal.
