Zoloft for alcoholism may be more detrimental

–July 14, 2004

Zoloft is an SSRI antidepressant drug that is often used to help relieve depression that accompanies alcoholism. A new study shows that Zoloft for treating type B alcoholics has no beneficial effect and may even cause increased drinking. Type B alcoholics have the most severe drinking problem, and there is concern that an SSRI might increase the desire to drink, as heavy drinking increased among the 45 type B alcoholics receiving Zoloft in the study.
