In December 2003, the FDA banned all products containing ephedra after being linked to 155 deaths. A new book has just been released, questioning why there are still ephedra containing products on the market despite the government ban. Using examples of ephedra products banned by the FDA and products still remaining on the market, the book's author concludes the only reason for the discrepancy is drug manufacturers political influence over the drug agency to eliminate competition.
Despite the questions raised by the book's author, the ephedra ban had been pushed for over two years. Ephedra was controversial because of its long stay on the market despite reports and risks of adverse effects. Due to a loophole in federal regulation, ephedra continued to stay on the market resulting in a high number of deaths and adverse effects. For more information on the ephedra ban, please contact us.
