Lariam, a drug given to thousands of soldiers to prevent instances of malaria, will be studied by the Defense Department and Veterans Affairs Department to better determine Lariam risks. Allegations of psychotic reactions, including depression, hallucinations, and thoughts of suicide have been made after Lariam was suspected of contributing to a series of murders and suicides amongst soldiers.
The FDA says that Lariam can cause suicidal thinking, aggression, delusions, and psychosis and the Lariam side effects can last longer than the duration of taking the drug.
