OxyContin addictions one of nation's highest priority drug problem

Opiate painkiller abuse, including OxyContin has dramatically risen in the last five years. Due to the fairly new increase in prescription painkiller abuse, there is an absence of epidemiological data. The increase in OxyContin and other opiate drug abuse is attributed to Internet sales and the increase of legal prescription sales over the years.

Attempts to improve prescription painkillers has allowed for increased availability of them. With strong opiate painkillers such as OxyContin, abuse of the drugs has also increased. Especially when forming an addiction at a younger age, OxyContin abuse can have lifelong effects. During adolescence the brain is especially susceptible to the effects of addictive substances, and addiction is a developmental brain disease.
