Mixing Herbal Meds and Prescription Drugs Can be Harmful

A new study found that older women who regularly mix over-the counter or herbal medications with prescription drugs may suffer increased health risks.
Furthermore, the study, published in the March issue of Geriatric Nursing, indicates that the health risks may go unnoticed since most women don't tell their doctors about all the drugs they take.

Vioxx Risk Begins At Four Months, Not at 18

A 104-page Merck report shows that the increased risk of heart attack and stroke begins when Vioxx is taken for four months, not 18 months as the drug maker has consistently maintained.
In September 2004, Vioxx was recalled because the risk of heart attack and stroke doubled in patients taking this drug for 18 months or longer. Merck, the drug's maker, has consistently argued that Vioxx cannot increase the risk of cardiovascular side effects in patients taking the drug for less than a year and a half.

Hypertension drugs increase diabetes risk

A new Harvard study indicates that drugs used to treat high blood pressure-- diuretics and beta-blockers-- can increase the risk of diabetes.
The exact relationship between antihypertensive drugs and the risk of diabetes is unclear, according to researchers, whose results were published in the medical journal Diabetes Care. They also add that previous studies have yielded conflicting results.
