NuvaRing and Myocardial Infarction

(800) 889-3898

NuvaRing, a vaginal contraceptive ring, is currently known to cause a number of serious health complications, including myocardial infarction – the medical term for nuvaring heart attack.

NuvaRing Myocardial infarction is a severe complication that results when a blood clot (another side effect of using NuvaRing) makes its way to the heart, cuts off the heart's blood supply and causes tissue death of the heart muscle. Because heart attacks can be life threatening, women using NuvaRing should be aware of the symptoms of and risk factors for myocardial infarction.

Should a NuvaRing user begin to experience any indication of myocardial infarction, she will need emergency medical care to prevent permanent heart damage and death.

Symptoms of NuvaRing Myocardial Infarction

Some NuvaRing users will experience "silent heart attacks," meaning that they will suffer a myocardial infarction with little, if any, symptoms.

However, when symptoms of heart attack are present, they generally include:

  • abdominal, neck and/or shoulder pain
  • chest pain
  • fatigue
  • nausea
  • shortness of breath
  • vomiting

Any combination of these symptoms will require immediate medical treatment to save a woman's life.

Risk Factors for Myocardial Infarction among NuvaRing Users Clearly, some women using NuvaRing will have a greater risk than others of experiencing a heart attack. Those with the highest associated risk include women over 35 who have a history of:

  • blood clots
  • deep vein thrombosis and/or pulmonary embolism
  • diabetes
  • heart attack, enlarged heart and other cardiac disorders
  • high blood pressure
  • smoking
  • stroke

If you are currently using NuvaRing (or are thinking of starting this birth control method), be sure to discuss your complete medical history with your doctor. NuvaRing users over 35 can reduce their risk of myocardial infarction by quitting smoking, eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly.

Following a NuvaRing Heart Attack

Women will need an alternative method of birth control, as well as:

  • Blood thinning medications: While aspirin is the most commonly prescribed anti-coagulant, heparin and/or warfarin may also be administered to reduce blood clots and promote healthy circulation in heart attack patients.
  • Pain relievers: Because myocardial infarction is typically marked by intense chest pain, morphine or other pain relievers may be part of the treatment for a heart attack.
  • Surgery: If the heart's arteries have been permanently constricted (usually due to complications of high cholesterol), surgery may be needed to widen the arteries and help more blood get to the heart.

Recovering Compensation for a NuvaRing Myocardial Infarction

After affected women follow through with all prescribed treatments, they should also consult with a personal injury lawyer who specializes in NuvaRing lawsuits. Given the serious, life-threatening nature of myocardial infarction, affected NuvaRing users will likely be entitled to monetary compensation for their injuries.

To encourage these women (and their families, if death has resulted from NuvaRing use) to pursue their cases, most experienced attorneys offer prospective clients free consultations during which they can evaluate their case and decide if they want to pursue a NuvaRing lawsuit.

By pursing their legal claim, injured NuvaRing patients can get the money they need to pay for medical bills, ongoing treatments and living costs, should the heart attack cause permanent damage.
