NuvaRing Periods & Bleeding

NuvaRing is a vaginal contraceptive ring that slowly releases estrogen and progestin over a three week period to prevent pregnancy by as much as 99 percent (when used as directed). Produced by Organon, NuvaRing was first approved by the Food and Drug Administration in October 2001.

Severe NuvaRing Side Effects: Fatal Blood Clots and NuvaRing

Rarely, NuvaRing has been known to cause some severe side effects, particularly blood clots.

While blood clots impair healthy circulation and can be painful, if left untreated, they can have potentially fatal complications, including (but not limited to):

• heart attack
• pulmonary embolism
• stroke

Women with the highest risk of developing NuvaRing blood clots (and other severe NuvaRing side effects) include those who are over 35 and/or have a history of:

• blood clots
• heart attack
• hypertension
• smoking
• stroke
