NuvaRing Periods & Bleeding

(888) 277-7509

NuvaRing is a vaginal contraceptive ring that slowly releases estrogen and progestin over a three week period to prevent pregnancy by as much as 99 percent (when used as directed). Produced by Organon, NuvaRing was first approved by the Food and Drug Administration in October 2001.

Unfortunately, however, NuvaRing has been reported to cause a range of serious side effects, including blood clots, which can have life-threatening complications if left untreated.

Women who develop NuvaRing blood clots (or other severe NuvaRing side effects) will likely be entitled to compensation for their injuries and losses. Injured NuvaRing users can get a thorough evaluation of their case by meeting with an experienced defective drug attorney for a free initial consultation.

Do You Have a Period When NuvaRing Is In?

To appropriately use NuvaRing, women should vaginally insert the plastic ring and leave it inserted for three weeks. Upon the fourth week, NuvaRing should be removed to allow menstruation.

In most cases, it will take about two months of using NuvaRing before a woman's period normalizes.

Mild NuvaRing Side Effects: NuvaRing Breakthrough Bleeding

As with other forms of birth control, NuvaRing can cause some mild side effects, including breakthrough bleeding – bleeding between periods. Breakthrough bleeding may also be referred to as spotting.

Although breakthrough bleeding can be unsightly or uncomfortable, it does not indicate the development of serious health complications. After using NuvaRing for approximately two months, the incidence of breakthrough bleeding should decrease (or cease altogether).

Other mild side effects of NuvaRing may include:

  • bloating
  • breast tenderness
  • cramps
  • dizziness
  • nausea
  • nervousness
  • weight or appetite changes

Should any of these mild NuvaRing side effects start to impair a woman's quality of life, she should talk to her doctor about alternative forms of contraception.

Severe NuvaRing Side Effects: Fatal Blood Clots and NuvaRing

Rarely, NuvaRing has been known to cause some severe side effects, particularly blood clots.

While blood clots impair healthy circulation and can be painful, if left untreated, they can have potentially fatal complications, including (but not limited to):

  • heart attack
  • pulmonary embolism
  • stroke

Women with the highest risk of developing NuvaRing blood clots (and other severe NuvaRing side effects) include those who are over 35 and/or have a history of:

Following NuvaRing Blood Clots

It's vital that injured women:

  • Seek immediate medical care to prevent potentially fatal NuvaRing side effects
  • Follow through with all long-term prescribed care for the best chances of recovery
  • Meet with an experienced NuvaRing lawyer to find out if they have a viable legal claim against Organon

During a free initial consultation, prospective plaintiffs can get expert advice regarding the best manner in which to pursue their case. They can also secure aggressive, professional representation for any future legal proceedings.

To further encourage injured NuvaRing users to seek the compensation they deserve, NuvaRing attorneys work on contingency – so no payment for legal services is due unless the case is settled or a court award is recovered.
