NuvaRing Removal

NuvaRing is a flexible ring that slowly releases hormones, estrogen and progestin, into a woman’s body. Designed to prevent pregnancy, the hormonal vaginal ring is inserted into the vagina and left inside for three weeks. After the third week, the ring is removed for one week (during which time the woman should have her period).

To ensure the NuvaRing works properly, all users must follow a strict insertion and removal process. The NuvaRing should be inserted into the vagina and left in for three weeks. In exactly three weeks from insertion, the ring needs to be removed. A new NuvaRing should then be inserted exactly one week after removal.

Women who use the NuvaRing as their primary source of birth control should always insert and remove the ring on exactly the same day of the week and should try and do it around the same time of day as well. Following a strict schedule will help with the effectiveness of the ring.

NuvaRing Insertion and Removal: Easy and Pain Free

New NuvaRing users may be afraid of inserting and removing the ring by themselves. However, the process is quite simple. To properly insert the vaginal ring, women should hold it between their thumb and index finger and press the opposite sides of the ring together. The folded ring should be inserted into the vagina and will be secured in by the vaginal muscles.

Although the ring should not provide discomfort, some women are aware that it is there and it may even be felt during intercourse.

When removing the NuvaRing, the best position is to hook your index finger under the rim of the ring and pull until it comes out. Once removed, the ring should not be flushed down the toilet.

How Soon After NuvaRing Removal Will I Start My Period?

Typically, women who use the NuvaRing will start their menstrual period 2 to 3 days after removing the NuvaRing. Even if your period is not over one week after removal of the last NuvaRing, you must still insert a new NuvaRing exactly one week after the last one was removed.
