NuvaRing Stroke

NuvaRing, a contraceptive vaginal ring, can be 98 to 99 percent effective when used properly. However, in certain patients, this birth control method may cause severe side effects, including blood clots and stroke.

Get emergency medical treatment to remove the blood clot and re-stabilize oxygen and blood flow to the brain. Doctors will typically use the following to treat stroke victims:

• Blood thinning medications, such as aspirin, heparin or warfarin (Of these, aspirin is the most commonly administered.)
• Surgery, which can widen the vein to the brain (carotid endarterectomy) or to the heart (angioplasty)
• Tissue plasmingogen injections, which involve the infection of an extremely potent anti-coagulant medication.
