NuvaRing Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)

First introduced in the U.S. in 2001, NuvaRing is a vaginal ring that prevents pregnancy by slowly releasing hormones (estrogen and progestin) in women's bodies over a three week period. However, there have been several reports of devastating side effects caused by this form of nuvaring birth control, including blood clots, pulmonary embolism (PE) and NuvaRing deep vein thrombosis (DVT).

Deep vein thrombosis is a condition in which blood clots develop in the body's deep veins, typically in the legs. While DVT itself is serious, as it can cause pain and impede healthy circulation, this condition can be life threatening if a blood clot breaks loose, makes its way to the lungs and complicates breathing. This severe condition is known as pulmonary embolism.

Symptoms of NuvaRing Deep Vein Thrombosis

Interestingly, about 50 percent of all deep vein thrombosis cases will exist without any noticeable symptoms. However, when DVT symptoms are present, they usually include:

• Ankle, leg and/or foot pain (In most cases, the pain will start in the calf muscle and will feel like a severe cramp)
• Inflammation in the affected area
• Redness and warmth in the affected area

• chest pain that worsens with deep breathing and/or coughing
• coughing up blood
• dizziness
• feelings of anxiety and/or nervousness
• shortness of breath (this is the most common symptom of PE)

Risk Factors for NuvaRing DVT

Some women will have a higher risk of developing deep vein thrombosis when using NuvaRing. Among these high risk patients are women over 35 years old who have a history of:

• blood clots
• DVT
• heart problems (including heart attack)
• smoking
• stroke

Keep in mind, however, that any woman using NuvaRing is at risk of experiencing DVT – regardless of her age and medical history.

Following a Deep Vein Thrombosis Diagnosis

NuvaRing users will need an alternative contraceptive method, as well as:

• Blood thinning (anti-coagulant) medications, which typically include heparin and warfarin
• Filters (wire structures inserted in the veins surrounding the lungs to prevent blood clots from causing pulmonary embolism)
• Thrombolytic medications (These are extremely potent clot-busting drugs that are used when traditional anti-coagulants are ineffective or when pulmonary embolism is present).

Doctors may also recommend that Deep Vein Thrombosis patients wear compression stockings for the first year after their diagnosis. Compression stockings, which can be knee- or thigh-high, firmly grip the leg to promote healthy circulation and prevent blood from pooling in the calves and ankles.
