Atrial Septal Defect and Paxil

(800) 250-7280

Paxil® is a brand name drug for paroxetine, a pharmaceutical used to help control the symptoms of depression and anxiety. New studies are showing that infants might be more at risk for developing an atrial septal defect or ASD if their mother uses Paxil® in her first trimester. ASD is only one of the many Paxil® birth defects currently being investigated.

Atrial septal defects affect the heart. These heart defects are sometimes difficult to repair, as they are part of a group of congenital heart diseases that require patch repair to fix the holes that have torn through the organ's tissue. Surgeries to aid in the closure of these holes are frequently performed and have a high success rate, which often greatly extends the lifespan of a child with ASD.

Atrial Septal Defect Symptoms

Adults who have a history of using Paxil® in their medical record should always be on the look out for symptoms and signs of atrial septal defects in their children's hearts. Early treatment and diagnosis is important.

The following is a list of common symptoms of atrial septal defects:

  • Easily becoming tired or fatigued
  • Sweating more than usual
  • Shortness or quickness of breath
  • Growth rate drops
  • Respiratory infections become frequent

Atrial Septal Defect Tests and Diagnosis

Tests and diagnosis all depend on the severity of a child's ASD. Some require open-heart surgery and the use of an umbrella closure to act as an aid to the septum secundum during patch repair. Other children who show minor symptoms of atrial septal defects caused by Paxil® might never have to undergo significant treatment.
