Tetralogy of Fallot With Pulmonary Atresia
Tetralogy of Fallot, otherwise known as TOF, is a medical condition that affects newborn babies and consists of four main components:
- A hole existing between ventricles of a patient. This hole is called a ventricular septal defect or VSD for short.
- Pulmonary stenosis, which is when the blood flow from the right ventricle is blocked on its way to the lungs. When it is completely blocked, this is called pulmonary atresia.
- When the aorta, the heart's major artery that is connected to the rest of the body, is positioned directly on to the ventricular septal defect.
- Thickening of the muscles or hypertrophy on the heart's right ventricle.
Pulmonary Atresia Symptoms
Though it may take several hours after a newborn has been alive to develop pulmonary atresia, some of the symptoms of the disease that affects both the lungs and the heart include:
- Fatigue or unusual perspiration
- Trouble with oxygen flow
- Fast breathing
- Slow breathing
- Skin turns blue around the face and chest (cyanosis)
Any of these symptoms may have potentially been caused by the drug Paxil® and could be an indication of pulmonary atresia.
Child Pulmonary Atresia
Pulmonary atresia is a condition that affects a child within a few hours of birth. Those children who are found to have pulmonary atresia and intact ventricular septum can have problems with their lungs and heart. Surgery may be required.
Paxil® Birth Defects
Tetralogy of fallot with pulmonary atresia might be a Paxil® birth defect. According to some studies, infants whose mother’s take Paxil® during pregnancy may be twice as likely to experience heart defects.
