Recent research has raised serious concerns about the safety of the popular heart medication Plavix. An anti-coagulant, Plavix is commonly used in conjunction with low dose aspirin therapy to prevent heart attacks in high-risk patients. Studies have shown, however, that Plavix causes potentially fatal gastrointestinal bleeding in patients with a history of peptic ulcer disease (PUD).
Plavix: Research and Risks
In a study conducted on patients who took Plavix along with aspirin and who also had a history of PUD or similar condition, an alarming 22 percent experienced severe gastrointestinal bleeding - compared with zero percent of those without a history.
Even worse, the pharmaceutical companies—Sanofi-Aventis and Bristol-Myers Squibb—failed to mention the significant risk of gastrointestinal bleeding in the drug's initial warning label.
Other risks associated with Plavix include:
Researchers have concluded that Plavix offers NO BENEFIT over standard preventative treatments such as the exclusive administration of aspirin. Patients with increased risk factors, such as a history of PUD, ulcers, recent trauma, or surgery, should avoid taking Plavix and discuss alternative treatments with a physician.
Plavix and the Law
Pharmaceutical companies are obligated by law to provide patients with adequate and accurate information about any dangers associated with their drugs. When a company fails to do so, it can be held legally responsible for any injuries sustained.
In the case of Plavix, the pharmaceutical companies initially made no mention of the increased risk of gastrointestinal bleeding in patients with a history of PUD. Individuals who have suffered this adverse side effect as a result of taking Plavix may be entitled to seek compensation for their losses through a Plavix lawsuit.
