Pradaxa® Side Effects
The anticoagulation medication Pradaxa (Dabigatran Etexilate) has very serious potential side effects, including life-threatening bleeding events, heart attacks and gastrointestinal problems. The risk of bleeding linked to Pradaxa is high enough that the FDA initiated its own safety review of Pradaxa's serious side effects.
The FDA approved Pradaxa in 2010 as a treatment for reducing the risk of blood clots that can cause strokes. It's administered to patients with atrial fibrillation (a common type of heart arrhythmia, or irregular heartbeat).
It soon became apparent that the bleeding events linked to Pradaxa use may be more severe and more common than is acceptable. Such events include:
- long-lasting or unstoppable bleeding
- unexpected bleeding
- bleeding with no clear cause
- bleeding that is out of control
- frequent and unexplained nose bleeds
- heavier-than-normal menstrual bleeding
- severe bleeding from the gums
Pradaxa Heart Side Effects
Also among the most serious potential side effects of Pradaxa are heart attacks. The signs and symptoms of heart attack include (but aren't limited to):
- a feeling of fullness or a squeezing pain in the center of the chest
- shortness of breath
- prolonged pain in the upper abdomen
- pain that extends beyond the chest to the arm, shoulder or back
- an impending sense of doom
Pradaxa and Death
Boehringer Ingelheim, the maker of Pradaxa, admitted that more than 250 patients' deaths were linked to the anticoagulant medication. The FDA said it is investigating serious bleeding events that can lead to death to determine whether the risk is greater than what is expected.
