Pradaxa® Side Effects
Patients undergoing treatment with Pradaxa® should talk about the potential risk of dangerous Pradaxa® side effects with their doctor. If you believe you might be experiencing tell tale symptoms of dangerous side effects such as regurgitating blood, see blood in you stool or urine, have frequent unexplained nose bleeds, or feel pain or weakness with no clear reason, speak to your doctor or seek emergency treatment at once.
Not long after Pradaxa® began to be widely used, it became clear that it may often be linked to incidents of bleeding on a frequent and severe basis, creating an unacceptable risk in terms of patient safety. The types of bleeding incidents often associated with the use of Pradaxa® encompasses:
- Bleeding with no apparent cause
- Bleeding on a surprise basis
- Bleeding that goes on for a long time period or is difficult or almost impossible to stop
- Uncontrollable bleeding
- Gum bleeding that is severe
- Unexplained nose bleeds that occur often
- Menstrual bleeding that is disturbingly heavier than normal
If someone loses too much blood from internal bleeding, organs can shut down and the person may go into shock and die. If the bleed is near the brain, the result may be a hemorrhagic stroke. Internal bleeding is a medical emergency that must be treated right away.
Pradaxa® Heart Attacks
Heart attacks are one of the most damaging side effects sometimes caused by Pradaxa® use. Just some of the symptoms and signals of such heart attacks are highlighted here:
- An overwhelming feeling of impending doom
- A squeezing pain or feeling of fullness in the chest's center
- Upper abdomen pain that goes on for an extended time period
- Pain beginning in the chest but radiating out to the back, shoulder or arm
- A feeling of nausea
A safety warning issued by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in December 2011 took note of the high number of atrial fibrillation patients treated with Pradaxa® who experienced heart attacks and serious bleeding events. Safety warnings issued by Australian and Japanese correlates of the U.S. FDA also described troubling heart attack and severe bleeding symptoms among Pradaxa® patients in those countries.
Even the maker of Pradaxa®, Boehringer Ingelheim, has conceded that its use has been linked to over 250 premature deaths. This and other concerns about the serious bleeding often brought on by the anticoagulant medication has prompted the FDA to quickly commence a broad investigation to see just how far the deadly risks of taking this drug extend.
