More Prilosec® Information
Prilosec® is an acid reducer. It belongs to a class of drugs called proton pump inhibitors.
Recent studies have found that all PPIs (proton pump inhibitors) may lead to a greater risk of bone fracture. In fact, the FDA has reviewed those studies and found significant cause to require all manufacturers of PPIs to include new information about this risk on their warning labels. This change took effect in May of 2010.
These drugs shut down some of the acid producing cells in the lining of the stomach. This greatly reduces the amount of excess acid, which may cause heartburn, exaggerate ulcers, and erode the lining of the esophagus. However, reduced acid levels may affect the way bodies absorb nutrients including calcium.
Prilosec® Bone Fractures
The observational studies that the FDA reviewed were conducted in clinical settings. In 6 out of 7 of them, patients taking PPI drugs such as Prilosec® and Nexium® were found more likely to suffer breaks of the spine, hip, and of course the wrist. These breaks resemble osteoporosis-related fractures and were found to be more common in patients who:
- Were over fifty years old
- Had taken the PPI for extended periods (over 1 year)
- Had taken multiple doses of these drugs in 1 day
- Had taken more than the average recommended dose
These studies found no difference in the rate of bone breakage between men and women, meaning that both are equally at risk.
Prilosec® Wrist Fracture Lawsuit
Finding the right lawyer to help file a wrist fracture lawsuit against the makers of Prilosec® (or any other Omeprazole-based drug) is important. It is critical that the lawyer understand pharmaceutical companies, the law as it relates to drugs, and a patient's rights and obligations.
Pharmaceutical companies have stables of lawyers at their disposal and a lot of money to throw up in their defense. However, if a drug has caused detrimental side effects or damage to a person's physical health, the manufacturer of that drug may be legally obligated to pay for that patient's medical treatments, pain and suffering, and reimburse them for time or wages lost.
To ensure that they get the maximum amount available to them, patients should always seek out lawyers with a proven track record in pharmaceutical lawsuits. In addition, finding a lawyer with experience with cases concerning the same drug the patient is either currently using or has used in the past is helpful.
