Procrit Heart Failure

Procrit belongs to a class of drugs used for treating anemia in certain cancer and kidney patients, HIV patients, and those scheduled to undergo major surgery. Although Procrit and two other erythropoiesis stimulating agents (ESAs)— Aranesp and Epogen —had previously been linked to serious side effects, recent research shows that the widely prescribed drugs increase the risk of potentially life threatening conditions including heart failure, heart attack, blood clots, and stroke.

Procrit Heart Failure Warning

In March 2007, the New England Journal of Medicine published a study finding that patients with chronic kidney disease had a higher rate of Procrit heart failure and stroke. These and other findings prompted the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to order Amgen Inc., the manufacturer of the three ESAs, to add a “black box” warning to the drugs' labeling. In addition to Procrit heart failure, the updated label alerts patients to the increased risk of:

• Blood clots, heart attacks, and death in kidney patients receiving higher than recommended doses.
• Death in non-chemotherapy cancer patients being treated with recommended doses.
• Accelerated tumor growth in patients with head and neck cancers being given higher than recommended doses.
• Blood clots in patients who had recently undergone orthopedic surgery.

Patients with a history of heart disease and/or kidney failure also face an increased risk of blood clots and death when taking Procrit or other ESA.
