What is Procrit?

Procrit (epoetin alfa) is a widely prescribed drug used to treat anemia in patients with kidney damage and in cancer patients whose lack of red blood cells results from chemotherapy. Procrit belongs to a class of drugs know as erythropoiesis stimulating agents (ESAs), which are designed to increase red blood cells produced by the kidney. In 2004, concerns over Procrit side effects were raised after several studies found an increased risk of heart complications and death linked to the drug. However, recent research indicates even more serious and potentially fatal adverse events, causing the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to issue a “black-box” warning—the strongest agency label—alerting doctors and patients to the significant risks of the drug.

If you or a loved one has suffered the devastating effects of Procrit or other anemia drug such as Epogen or Aranesp , you may be eligible to recover your losses including medical bills, pain and anguish, and more. Please contact us today to get in touch with a proven product liability lawyer who can evaluate your case FREE of charge and inform you of your legal rights and options.

Procrit “Black-Box” Warning

In March 2007, the FDA required Amgen, Inc. and Johnson & Johnson (the maker and distributor of Procrit) to add a black-box label on the drug, citing the following risks:

  • Heightened risk of heart attacks, blood clots, and even death in patients with kidney failure who receive higher than recommended doses of Procrit.
  • Faster tumor growth in cancer patients who receive higher doses of Procrit.
  • Increased risk of death in cancer patients who receive normal doses of Procrit without chemotherapy.
  • Higher chance of blood clots in patients who receive Procrit after orthopedic surgery.

Furthermore, the new Procrit “black-box” warning advises physicians to monitor the red blood cell levels of their patients and prescribe the lowest possible dosage of Procrit to prevent the need for blood transfusions. Patients are also urged to weigh the risks and benefits of the drug with their doctors.
