Propecia® Linked to Erectile Dysfunction
Merck Pharmaceuticals, which produces Propecia®, acknowledges that the side effects can include a lowered desire for sexual intercourse, impotence, and a decrease in the amount of semen in an ejaculation. However, while Merck claims that these Propecia® side effects only affect 2 percent of all users and that the problems disappear when the men stop taking the medicine; a new study contradicts these claims.
The study, which was published in March of 2011, was conducted at George Washington University. Former Propecia® users between the ages of 21 and 46 were in the study, and 94 percent had low libido, 92 percent experienced impotence, and 69 percent had problems with orgasm. The average length of treatment time with Propecia® was 28 months, but the sexual side effects were felt for an average of 40 months past the end of treatment.
Permanent Erectile Dysfunction
Most alarmingly, the study found that 20 percent of the men were still experiencing impotence and other problems with sexual intercourse for more than five years.
